Curveballs for Kids: What Age Is Safe to Start?

Curveballs are one of the most debated topics in youth baseball. Some coaches say wait until high school. Some say it's fine in middle school. Most pediatric arm-health research is mixed.

Here's a practical answer: I generally don't introduce curveballs until around age 12. The arm and shoulder need to be strong enough, and the mechanics need to be repeatable enough, for the pitch to be thrown the right way without compensating.

But here's what every young pitcher should learn first: the changeup. The changeup is just as effective as a breaking ball at the youth level, and it's completely safe at any age. It teaches the pitcher to control velocity, change a hitter's timing, and learn the value of mixing pitches — without any added stress on the elbow or shoulder.

Master the fastball. Develop the changeup. Add the curveball when the body is ready. That's the path.
