Why Your Kid Walks Too Many Batters

When a young pitcher walks too many batters, parents and coaches almost always say the same thing: 'just throw strikes.' That advice doesn't work. The pitcher already wants to throw strikes.

The real issue is two-fold: inconsistent mechanics and aiming the ball. When mechanics aren't repeatable, the release point isn't repeatable either, which means the strike zone moves with every pitch. And when the pitcher tries to compensate by aiming, they slow down their delivery, lose timing, and miss even more.

The fix is repetition of the right mechanics. We build the delivery in the bullpen so many times that on the mound, the pitcher doesn't aim — they trust the body to repeat what it already knows. That's how command shows up.

Real command isn't a focus skill. It's a body skill that becomes a focus skill once the mechanics are dialed in.
